William Gallas for France (v Republic of Ireland), 18 November 2009

Hmmm. Having looked at it a few times, it really was quite horribly blatant, wasn't it?

It was a horrible moment - especially the second handball - but I can't help feeling a bit sorry for Thierry Henry: it's a moment's action and I think he knew immediately that this was a bad one, and that this was going to scar his reputation. He's come clean and apologised in public, he apparently told the referee... it's perhaps cowardly to say he's not the referee, but what's he supposed to do here? How would you feel if, in the same position, Wayne Rooney cost us World Cup Qualification by giving up the goal that would have sent us through? Would we praise his sportmanship, or would we be burning effigies? Was Robbie Keane not busy trying to handball all night at the other end?

It's crap and I feel desperately sorry for Ireland, but we now need to be looking at the officials and at FIFA for their response.

Mind you, poor Thierry is off to the world cup, isn't he?
