Chris Brunt for West Bromwich Albion (v West Ham United), 13 September 2008

Watching the West Brom v West Ham game at the weekend, I wondered when the last time was that two top flight clubs played each other with neither of them sporting a shirt sponsor. Other than a freak scenario like this one, it must have been the Seventies, mustn't it?

Man City vs Man Utd, last season?

ah, yes. Good point. There was a reason there, though, I suppose.

Not the same division, obviously, but Roma didn't have a shirt sponsor a couple of years ago. Not sure if there was anyone else in Serie A in the same boat, but I guess it must happen? What will Utd do if/when AIG go under? The same thing? Who else is sponsored by a financial institution?

or how about if anyone is sponsored by an alcoholic drink or a bookies or something and they drew a team in european competition from a country where such things are banned?
