Thierry Henry for Arsenal (v Wigan Athletic), 7 May 2006

Hasn't Arsene Wenger broken the number one rule of football management?

I thought that no one individual was ever bigger than a football club?

Persuading Thierry Henry to stay at Arsenal is more important than winning the Champions League, apparently.

Isn't the success of the club in trophy terms more important than the contract and future of an individual player? Would you expect to hear Clough or Paisley or Ferguson or Mourinho telling the press that they would rather keep their star player than win the European Cup? Not in a million years....

Well, with Henry around Wenger knows that Arsenal have the potential to win a lot of silverware in the next 4 years. Hollow victory if you win the European Championship, then lose your star attraction & are forced to go through lean years while you struggle under the burden of paying off a massive new building. Henry on the team guarantees Wenger has the time & resources to develop a team that will go into a Champions final as favorites, not underdogs.

In theory no individual is bigger but in practice, it's a bit more blurry. For example, without Steven Gerrard, would Liverpool have won the Champs League last year, the FA Cup this year, or closed the gap on Chelsea in the league? Without Henry, it's possible Arsenal would drop out of the top 4 teams, but with him, they have a real chance of some glory.

BTW, I succumbed and bought my WC panini album - only one swapsie but I'll wait til I have a few more before I list them. I notice that every other country has their country badge but Panini obviously didn't have England's permission to print the 3 lions badge.

Good point. I wonder what the other stars who are already there (Campbell, Cole, Reyes and even Fabregas soon) will think of that approach?

But at least this means they have a chance to get there again: losing one captain is unlucky, losing two in two years would be...
